3D Design & Fabrication Intern β Mechanical Engineering
We’re building next-generation compact diagnostic instruments. We need a hands-on mechanical engineer who can turn ideas into printable reality β from SolidWorks assembly to production-ready FDM/SLA parts.
π Duration: 3β6 Months | π’ Mode: On-site / Hybrid | π° Stipend: Performance-based | π Start: Rolling Admissions
About the Role
As a 3D Design & Fabrication Intern, you will work directly with our R&D team to design, prototype, and iterate mechanical enclosures, optical holders, and functional parts for our diagnostic platforms. Expect real work β your files will be sliced, printed, and tested on the same week you design them.
What You’ll Do
- Design parametric 3D models for optical enclosures, housings, and jigs using SolidWorks or equivalent
- Prepare STL/STEP files and optimize geometry for FDM, SLA, and resin printing
- Set up and operate desktop 3D printers (Bambu Lab, Prusa, Formlabs)
- Perform dimensional validation using calipers, fit-check assemblies, and iterative re-design
- Collaborate with electronics and software teams for mechatronic integration
- Maintain a design log with version-controlled CAD files and print settings
Who You Are
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (2nd year or above)
- Proficient in SolidWorks (assembly, drawings, tolerancing)
- Familiar with at least one other tool: Fusion 360, CATIA, Creo, Inventor, or FreeCAD
- Understanding of GD&T, tolerances, and print-process constraints
- Comfortable with slicing software (Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Chitubox)
- Good communicator; can articulate design trade-offs clearly
What You’ll Deliver
- Functional 3D-printed prototype of assigned component
- Complete SolidWorks/CAD assembly with drawings
- Print settings log with iteration notes
- BOM (Bill of Materials) for fabricated parts
- Final design report + intern presentation
What You Gain
- Real hardware experience in a deep-tech startup
- Letter of recommendation & certificate
- Exposure to novel diagnostic instrument design
- Access to SLA, FDM, and resin printers
- Networking with IIT Delhi & Aalto University researchers
- Potential for PPO for outstanding interns
Nice-to-Have Skills
- PCB enclosure design or heatsink modeling
- Material selection knowledge (PLA, PETG, ABS, resins)
- FEA basics (SolidWorks Simulation or ANSYS)
- Laser cutting or CNC familiarity
- Python or Arduino for mechatronic integration
- GitHub or PLM tool experience
